How to Add a Bow to Any Wreath & How to Hang a Wreath with a Ribbon

Ever wondered how to tie a bow on your wreath? It’s an easy way to transform any wreath into a statement piece or add a lovely seasonal touch. Whether you’re celebrating the vibrancy of spring, the warmth of fall, or the festive spirit of winter, the right bow can elevate your wreath’s look and highlight its best features. Plus, a bow makes it simple to hang your wreath, making seasonal swaps easier than ever.

In this article, we’ll guide you through two key techniques to make your wreath truly shine: how to add a beautiful bow to an existing wreath and how to hang a wreath using a bow. With these tips, you’ll create a versatile wreath that enhances your home’s décor year-round.

Why Use a Bow Ribbon for Hanging?

A well-chosen ribbon can beautifully complement the colors and textures of your wreath while also providing a practical way to secure it.

If you’ve ever bought a wreath and struggled to hang it, you’ll love using a bow. A bow gives you the flexibility to position your wreath at the perfect height and location, which is especially useful for doors with non-standard dimensions, such as taller doors, doors with extended measurements, or double doors.

Step-by-Step Guide to Adding a Bow Ribbon to a Wreath

Before adding your bow, gather the right materials. We generally recommend 7 to 8 feet of ribbon to create a hanging bow for wreaths that are 16” to 26” in diameter. For larger wreaths, add an extra foot of ribbon.

We’ve outlined the steps below, but if you’re a visual learner like us, be sure to watch this video!

  1. Choose Your Ribbon: For our demo, we’re using a 24-inch wreath with a fun, striped black and white ribbon that is about 7.5 feet long. Remember, the longer the ribbon, the fuller and more dramatic the bow will be.
  2. Position the Ribbon: Wrap the ribbon around your wreath at a point where it hangs nicely. Pull it tight to secure it to the grapevine.
  3. Tie the Bow: Create a classic shoestring bow—just like tying your shoelaces! Leave 6-8 inches of ribbon at the top to allow space for hanging the wreath and letting the streamers drape beautifully.
  4. Adjust & Fluff: Once the bow is attached, shape and adjust the loops and tails until you achieve the desired look. For a polished finish, trim the ends of the ribbon at an angle or cut them into a “V” shape. This final touch adds elegance and prevents fraying, ensuring your bow stays beautiful all season long.

That’s it!

How to Hang a Wreath with a Bow Ribbon:

Once your bow is secured, hanging your wreath is easier than ever.

Locate the section of ribbon just below the knot and place it on a hook, nail, or over-the-door wreath hanger. Adjust the ribbon and bow to ensure the wreath hangs straight and at the desired height. Step back to check that everything is aligned. If you need to adjust the height, simply remove the wreath and re-tie the bow as needed.

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Bow Ribbon

Not sure which bow to use? Choosing the right ribbon can make all the difference in creating a stunning wreath display. Here are some tips to help you select the perfect ribbon that complements your wreath and adds just the right touch of style.

Ribbon Types to Know:

The type of ribbon you choose will shape the overall look and feel of your bow.

  • Wired vs. Non-Wired Ribbons: Wired ribbons are ideal for creating structured, voluminous bows that hold their shape over time. Non-wired ribbons, like silk or satin, provide a softer, more flowing look, perfect for a relaxed or romantic feel. Consider the color, pattern, and width of the ribbon to match the theme and style of your wreath.
  • Materials: Choose the ribbon material to match the occasion or season. Satin and velvet ribbons offer a luxurious, elegant appearance, while burlap and grosgrain provide a more rustic or casual vibe. Think about your wreath’s theme and select a ribbon that enhances its overall look.

Ribbon Colors and Patterns:

Selecting the right color and pattern for your ribbon is essential to complement or contrast with your wreath.

  • Colors: Choose colors that match or contrast with your wreath’s foliage and decorative elements. For example, a green wreath might pop with a bold red bow for a classic Christmas look, or you could use a neutral tone to keep it understated.
  • Patterns: Seasonal or themed patterns can add extra charm. Think plaid or gingham for a festive winter feel, pastels for spring, or metallics for a glamorous holiday touch.

Size Matters:

The size and width of the ribbon play a significant role in the bow's final impact.

  • Width: For larger wreaths, choose a wider ribbon (2-4 inches) to create a bold statement. Smaller wreaths are best suited to narrower ribbons (1-2 inches) to maintain balance and proportion. The ribbon width should complement the wreath's size and the style you’re aiming for.

Creative Bow Ideas for Different Seasons and Occasions

Adding a bow ribbon is a fantastic way to customize your wreath for any season or occasion. Here are some creative ideas to inspire your wreath decorations year-round:

Spring/Summer Wreath Ribbons

For a fresh, airy look in spring, choose light, pastel-colored ribbons or those with floral patterns. Soft pinks, pale blues, and floral prints evoke a sense of new beginnings and the vibrancy of spring. For summer, consider bolder, brighter colors like sunny yellows, vivid corals, or turquoise to capture the lively, carefree feel of the season. These colors can instantly brighten up any wreath and bring a burst of energy to your décor.

Fall Wreath Ribbons

Embrace the warmth of autumn with burlap or plaid ribbons in rich, earthy tones. Colors like deep oranges, rustic browns, and burgundy create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, reflecting the beauty of fall foliage. These ribbons add a touch of rustic charm that complements the season’s natural elements.

Winter and Christmas Wreath Ribbons

For a festive, elegant touch, opt for velvet or satin ribbons in rich reds, greens, or metallics like gold and silver. These luxurious ribbons enhance the holiday spirit and add a glamorous flair to your wreath, making it a standout piece in your winter décor.

Year-Round Wreath Ribbons

Neutral colors and classic patterns like stripes offer timeless appeal. These versatile ribbons work throughout the year, providing a subtle yet stylish accent that complements any wreath design—perfect for those who prefer a more understated or adaptable look.

How to Care for Your Bow Ribbons Season After Season

To keep your bow ribbons looking their best year after year, proper care and maintenance are key. Here’s how to ensure your ribbons stay in top shape:

Iron Out Wrinkles:
If your ribbons develop wrinkles or creases, use a low-heat iron or steamer to smooth them out. For delicate or synthetic ribbons, place a pressing cloth between the iron and the ribbon to prevent damage and preserve its quality.

Trim Frayed Edges:
When ribbon ends start to fray, trim them neatly with sharp scissors to keep a polished appearance. To prevent further fraying, consider sealing the edges with a small amount of clear nail polish or fabric glue, which can help keep your ribbons looking fresh and new.

Proper Storage:
When not in use, store your ribbons in a cool, dry place to avoid wrinkles and preserve their color. Roll them up or fold them loosely to prevent creasing. Avoid exposing ribbons to direct sunlight, as this can lead to fading and discoloration over time.

By following these care tips, you can ensure that your ribbons remain vibrant and beautiful, ready to enhance your wreaths for any occasion.
